To seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
1 Thessalonians 4:11 (CSB)
Some questions to consider:
- Have we devoted ourselves to doing good at work?
- Are we working hard for Jesus?
- Are we giving our work 100% of our effort?
- Are we doing work ourselves or just paying others to do work for us?
- Have we become a burden to others by not working?
- Are we taking food stamps but refuse to work?
- Do we go about our work quietly and just focus on the work?
Why it matters: God has ordained work. God created it for us. God is serious about our taking joy in our work. We bring glory to God when we work. We show great wisdom when we work.
God’s goal: The goal is to work and work hard. We should delight in Mondays and look forward to going to work. Dread will drag down our testimony. Others will know if we are faking it.
- Titus 3:14 (CSB) — 14 Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works for pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.
- Proverbs 6:6 (CSB) — 6 Go to the ant, you slacker! Observe its ways and become wise.
- Ecclesiastes 9:10 (CSB) — 10 Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:11 (CSB) — 11 to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
- Thessalonians 3:7–12 (CSB) — 7 For you yourselves know how you should imitate us: We were not idle among you; 8 we did not eat anyone’s food free of charge; instead, we labored and toiled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 It is not that we don’t have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. 10 In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: “If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.” 11 For we hear that there are some among you who are idle. They are not busy but busybodies. 12 Now we command and exhort such people by the Master Jesus the Messiah to work quietly and provide for themselves.
Good reminder: “We bring glory to God when we work.”
