Let each one live his life in the situation the Master assigned when God called him. This is what I command in all the churches.
1 Corinthians 7:17 (CSB)
Why it matters: We seem to hold certain jobs in higher esteem than others. We think everyone must have a college education. That is not God’s way. I repeat, that is not God’s way at all.
The way I see it: There is honor in all types of work. What is important is to focus on what kind of work brings glory to God. It could be cleaning out septic tanks or being a neurosurgeon. Both are important, both must be done, and both can bring glory to God and His holy name.
God is God: God is infinite, never changes, has no needs, all powerful, all-knowing, always everywhere, full of perfect, unchanging wisdom, faithful, good, just, wrathful, merciful, gracious, loving, holy, glorious, infinitely beautiful, great and more. God is God. God has designed work for us. We must do it for God and for God alone.
Good news: God has given us work to do. Every kind of job is important. Our work is seen as good and it will bring glory to God.
- Genesis 2:15 (CSB) — 15 The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.
- Exodus 31:1–6 (CSB) — 1 The Lord also spoke to Moses: 2 “Look, I have appointed by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every craft 4 to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 to cut gemstones for mounting, and to carve wood for work in every craft. 6 I have also selected Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to be with him. I have put wisdom in the heart of every skilled artisan in order to make all that I have commanded you:
- Exodus 35:30–35 (CSB) — 30 Moses then said to the Israelites: “Look, the Lord has appointed by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 31 He has filled him with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every kind of craft 32 to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, 33 to cut gemstones for mounting, and to carve wood for work in every kind of artistic craft. 34 He has also given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all the work of a gem cutter; a designer; an embroiderer in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen; and a weaver. They can do every kind of craft and design artistic designs.
- Psalm 78:70–71 (CSB) — 70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; 71 he brought him from tending ewes to be shepherd over his people Jacob— over Israel, his inheritance.
- Matthew 13:55 (CSB) — 55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
- Romans 13:6 (CSB) — 6 And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s servants, continually attending to these tasks.
- 1 Corinthians 7:17 (CSB) — 17 Let each one live his life in the situation the Lord assigned when God called him. This is what I command in all the churches.
- 1 Corinthians 7:20–24 (CSB) — 20 Let each of you remain in the situation in which he was called. 21 Were you called while a slave? Don’t let it concern you. But if you can become free, by all means take the opportunity. 22 For he who is called by the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called as a free man is Christ’s slave. 23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of people. 24 Brothers and sisters, each person is to remain with God in the situation in which he was called.
Good reminder: “There is honor in all types of work.”
