Why it matters: God wants us to work. God works. We are made in the image of God. Work is good. Work matters. Our faith at work matters and makes a difference in the Kingdom of God. Sustaining ourselves through work is the way of God.

God’s goal: The goal is to be self-sustaining through our work. We may have to sweat to get it done. This is our life. This is the way God wants it to be. We must clearly demonstrate that at our place of work. Others must know we are working hard for God.

The broad view:

  • Genesis 3:19 (CSB) — 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”
  • Psalm 128:2 (CSB) — 2 You will surely eat what your hands have worked for. You will be happy, and it will go well for you.
  • Thessalonians 4:12 (CSB) — 12 so that you may behave properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone.

Good news: God ordains that we work. God gives us the power of the Holy Spirit to help make it happen. We are not in it alone. God promises that when we work, we “will be happy and it will go well for us.”

God can do anything: God will show us what to focus on at work. God will give us wisdom and insight. Our faith will make a difference because we serve a mighty God who is in charge. God’s will is going to be done.
