The world is changing faster than we can keep up. What we know and perhaps dread is the fact that it is only going to get faster not slower.
Business models are important to changing a culture that can keep up. All companies have them whether they are explicit or not.
The model we have does lead to impact in the market place so being explicit and intentional with the business model is important to having a business impact. Here are three to consider.
- Incremental. A business effect that results in marginal improvement. This model is the default for many businesses. When it comes to digital, this approach is about doing digital but definitely not about being digital.
- Transformational. A business effect that that results in a noteworthy improvement and innovation. This clearly moves to the next level in not just doing digital but truly being digital.
- Exponential. A business effect that results in extraordinary improvements
and innovation. This model pushes the envelope for sure. There are huge risks here but the home run does pay off. But, enough strikeouts will put you on the bench for sure.
These models also relate to change adoption styles. The wonderful world of change management is an essential competency. Having an explicit strategy will pay off in true culture change.
- Mainstream. An organization style that prefers generally accepted technologies.
- Early Adopter. An organizational style that begins using new and emerging technologies upon general availability.
- Bleeding Edge. An organization style that proactively uses new and emerging technologies prior to general availability.
So, what choices should we make?
