Jesus has a lot to say about our faith at work. It is not what I thought he would say. I have stepped back because what Jesus advocates is antithetical to normal work models and clearly counter to the “servant leader” model.

  • God places us in a position of prominence because we have a servant’s heart and place ourselves last.
  • Our goal is not to lead.
  • Our goal is not to be first.
  • Our Goal is always to serve.

What Jesus has to say will shock what you have learned in business school and church.

  • Imagine you are in your MBA class and the professor tells you must be poor in spirit or pure in heart. It is not going to happen. No way!
  • Where is the MBA course on love? Yet, as colleagues, that is the job that Jesus gives us to do.
  • Where is the MBA course on always being last? It does not exist.
  • Work, the worlds way, is about getting ahead and getting promoted. It is about money, personal influence, recognition, and promotion.
  • Are we ready to exhibit gentleness, love, joy, kindness, mercy, patience and more about the way of Jesus at work?

I had a CEO once tell me that during my next presentation I needed to quit talking about what others had done and talk about what I had done. And she was serious. I am ashamed to admit I took her advice. She would have been angry if I had not. I have always regretted doing that. Not a highlight of my walk with Jesus.

Jesus is clear. “Many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Is Jesus serious? I think He is. I think He means it.
