Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So, if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. [1]

~Jesus (Matthew 6:19-24)

Why it matters at work: Most of us work for the primary purpose of making a living. We join companies because of the money. We leave companies because of the money. It is a huge driving force at work. We are manipulated day in and day out because of our salary and benefits. It will test our faith. Jesus is clear about this.

We are going to be out of step on this issue. We are not to concern ourselves with money at work. We working to store up our heavenly wealth not our earthly possessions.

What? Jesus cannot be serious about this, can he?

  • Jesus gives us a binary choice here. Serve God or money.
  • Jesus knows the danger of materialism.
  • This is a huge issue for us in our lives and will test our faith at work.

Money at work controls most of corporate behavior. Companies and executives know this. We must break the hold money has on us at work and be free. That freedom will lead us in ways we could not dream possible. When God is the only thing that matters to us at work, we destroy the fear of losing our jobs to keep our paycheck.
